If you need to prove your English proficiency for university admission, immigration, or a visa application, you’ve probably come across both PTE Academic and TOEFL iBT. Both are widely accepted, but they’re structured very differently, and the right choice depends on your strengths and your goals.

Format

PTE Academic is fully computer-based and scored by AI, including the speaking section. TOEFL iBT is also computer-based, but speaking responses are scored by a combination of AI and human raters.

Test length

PTE Academic typically takes about 2 hours. TOEFL iBT usually runs closer to 3 hours. If exam stamina or scheduling is a concern, PTE’s shorter format can be an advantage.

Speaking section

PTE’s speaking tasks are shorter and more structured (repeat sentence, describe image, and similar tasks), which can suit test-takers who prefer clear, predictable formats. TOEFL’s speaking section asks for more open, extended responses, which can favor test-takers who are comfortable speaking at length.

Where each one is accepted

Both exams are accepted by thousands of universities and by immigration authorities in Australia, the UK, Canada, and New Zealand. It’s still worth confirming directly with your specific university or visa program, since acceptance can vary.

Which should you choose?

If you prefer a shorter test with more structured, predictable tasks, PTE preparation is usually the better fit. If you’re comfortable with longer, more open-ended speaking and writing tasks, TOEFL preparation may suit you better.
