If you've taken a practice IELTS Speaking test and felt like your score didn't match how well you actually speak English, you're not alone. Most students lose marks not because their English is weak, but because of a handful of habits that are easy to fix once you know what examiners are listening for. 1. Memorising answers word-for-word Examiners are trained to spot rehearsed answers. Memorised responses tend to sound flat, rushed, or oddly disconnected from the actual question. Instead of memorising full answers, prepare ideas and vocabulary for common topics (work, hobbies, hometown, technology) and practise speaking about them differently each time. This keeps your speech natural and responsive to the actual question asked. 2. Giving one-word or very short answers In Part 1, many candidates answer "Do you like your job?" with just "Yes, I like it." That's grammatically correct but gives the examiner almost nothing to score. Aim for 2-3 sentences per answer: give your answer, then add a reason or example. "Yes, I really enjoy it because I get to solve problems every day, and no two days are the same." 3. Losing fluency when self-correcting Small grammar slips are normal and won't destroy your score. What hurts more is stopping mid-sentence, going silent, and restarting from scratch. If you notice a mistake, correct it briefly and keep moving: "I go, I mean I went, to Dubai last year." A quick, confident correction shows control of the language; a long pause shows anxiety. 4. Avoiding Part 2 like it's a memory test The Part 2 cue card trips people up because they treat it as a test of what they can remember rather than what they can describe. You get one minute to prepare - use it to jot down 4-5 keywords, not full sentences. Then talk naturally around those keywords for the full two minutes. Running out of things to say after 40 seconds is one of the most common ways candidates lose marks here. 5. Ignoring Part 3's need for opinions and analysis Part 3 questions are broader and more abstract ("How has technology changed the way people your age communicate?"). Many candidates answer these the same way they answered Part 1 - briefly and personally. Part 3 rewards candidates who can discuss ideas, compare perspectives, and give reasoned opinions, even if they're not fully confident in the topic. None of these fixes require you to "know more English" - they require practising the right way.
